Winterly Cabbage Stew

Hi folks,

originally Katja came up with the recipe I'm going to present today. Since the first time she's cooked it in the theater's office kitchen it became one of my favourite winter dishes: cabbage stew with potatoes, lentils and a hint of tomato. Yummy! :)

What you'll need (for 4 persons)
  • half a cabbage
  • 2 big potatoes
  • 1 spring onion
  • 400 g lentils (canned)
  • 4-5 tbsp. sieved tomatoes (or 1-2 fresh ones, chopped)
  • lemon juice
  • olive oil
  • salt and pepper
  • soy sauce
  • sour cream or soy yoghurt

How it works

Chop the spring onion, cube the potatoes and cut the cabbage into slices.


Heat some olive oil in a pan and brown the vegetables for a few minutes. Add about 700 ml water and boil on small heat for about 15 minutes until the potatoes are soft. Now add the sieved tomatoes (in case you use fresh tomatoes brown them with the other vegetables) and the lentils. Salt and pepper the stew and add some lemon juice to taste. If you want you can also add some soy sauce. Boil for five more minutes.


Serve the stew in soup dishes and garnish each dish with a tablespoon of sour cream or soy yoghurt. Enjoy! :)

    1. Hey Lysa! Yes, the stew makes really for a good winter dish. I think it would also be perfect for a larger group of persons (winter party? :) ) as it's very easy to make and doesn't loose flavor if you have to heat it up again...

    1. Hello Karren! Yes, I think the tomato definitely makes the difference in this dish. When I cooked the dish for the first time I was actually quite skeptical about the tomato because at least here in Austria it's not the most thought of combination, but the truth it cabbage and tomatoes are a perfect fit... :)
