Green Sunday IV: Sustainable Fashion

Hello everybody, hallo zusammen,

time for a new Green Sunday post!
As you all may know, last week was Fashion Revolution Day in remembrance of the 1133 people who were killed when the Rana Plaza factory complex collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2013. To raise awareness on the topic of the disastrous production conditions in the fashion industry there were actions worldwide, such as this 2-Euro-T-shirt vendor by Fashion Revolution Day Germany positioned on Alexanderplatz in Berlin.
To link to this topic here as well, I thought it might be fun to make this Green Sunday post about sustainable fashion and ways how to avoid buying unethically or environmentally problematic clothes. Believe me, I know that's not easy (I mean, it's pretty obvious that fashion is one of my guilty pleasures!), and getting there will probably take some time (I definitely know it will for me). Nevertheless, I also really do believe that changing the world always starts with changing one's own behavior and if we all change (step by step) together the whole process will be much faster! And the good news is: You won't have to give up your good style for that at all!!

1) Don't buy new clothes / Kauf keine neuen Klamotten

INSTEAD: wear what you already have, swap, borrow, change, repair, upcylce or sew!
STATTDESSEN: Zieh an, was du schon hast, tausche, leihe, verändere, repariere, upcycle oder nähe!

Be honest to yourself: you probably have already enough (pretty) clothes in your closet! So the next time before you take the five T-shirts and three dresses, you've just tried on (and that are all so cute and CHEAP), to the cash desk, consider for a minute if you really need or at least really, really want them. This way you cannot only save a lot of money but also prevent your closet from overflowing.
If your closet has already overflown (which happens to me on a regular basis, although I already buy much less often than I used to), it's time to sort out and discard. However, DON'T throw away these items. Instead, organise a clothes swapping party with your friends, where everybody brings discarded items to swap with each other. I've made that a few times already and it was always a huge success. Just be sure not to take too many new things, or your closet will overflow right away again... ;)
Other possibilities to avoid buying new clothes are repairing, changing or upcycling the pieces you already have. Do you love the color of your jeans but the style is out of fashion? Maybe you can make a new short out of it! Did you lose weight and don't fit in your clothes anymore? Go to the tailor and let them make narrower! Oh, and consider repairing items when they just have a little hole or something, instead of throwing them away. Or do you really want to spend all of your fashion budget on new socks?? ;)

All swapped!

2) Buy Second Hand / Kaufe 2nd Hand

I am not sure if I ever explained, why I'm a big fan of second hand and vintage clothes on this blog. However, there are a few reasons: First, I simply like the idea of wearing something with history, that is unique and that nobody else has got. Second, buying second hand is usually much more economic than buying in store and this way, I can also afford items from brands I could ususally never pay for. Finally, one mustn't forget the ecological advantages. By buying something old you can actually help preventing something new from being produced and this saves a lot of energy and resources. This is of course a very simplified representation, but even big brands don't like to spend tons of money on producing clothes, which they won't sell in the end.

3) Buy at the right places / Kaufe in den richtigen Läden

I know that there still exists this cliché out there, that all sustainably and/or fairly produced clothes will make you look like an eco-activist with bad taste from the 1970s, but the thing is: That's simply not true anymore! In the meantime you can find more than enough labels which specialize in producing high-quality, modern and sustainable clothes. I intend to publish a more comprehensive list soon, but just to give you a few examples:

1) I just detected the L.A. based label Reformation two weeks ago but I'm in love already. In my opinion they make really beautiful and sexy clothes and I would love to have one of their dresses!

2) People Tree is a British brand and they've been producing (certified) fair and sustainable fashion for over 20 years now. I really like their clothes and there are always great items on sale too.

3) If you are in need for new sneakers, check out veja. They produce fair-trade sneakers in cooperation with Brazilian organic cotton farmers and sustainable rubber tappers.

4) I guess the chic bags by FREITAG don't need any further introduction. As of recently the Swiss company does not only sell its cool accessories, but also offers a new clothing line made from a compostable fabric.

5) If you are in need for more classic or basic items, check out hessnatur.de, a German online store for organic fashion. There you can get everything from top to bottom, even socks and underwear.

Are these brands more expensive than other ones? Well, it depends, but probably yes. But guess what? That is totally okay, because then you can be sure that the producers were paid fairly and that your clothes don't destroy the environment. In addition, if you follow the tipps 1) and 2) you'll save enough money, so that it will easily be possible to spend a little more money on a fairly produced piece of fashion you'd really like to have from time to time!

Kommt darauf an, in vielen Fällen wahrscheinlich ja.

Great Sunday to all of you! Schönen Sonntag euch allen!
